Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (2022)

While shonen franchises like to portray their heroes as shining symbols of justice and morality, they ever so often like to dip those pure figures on the dark side. Whether they're going ballistic after another character's death, cold and calculating for the sake of a war, or just corrupted (momentarily or permanently) by the world around them, it's always fun to see the "good guys" become the "bad guys."

In Hunter x Hunter, Gon Freecss is one such figure whose entire innocence does a 180 seemingly during the Chimera Ant Arc. However, as some fans have learned after a rewatch or reread, Gon hasshown signs of moral ambiguity if not outright cruelty before. It's enough to make one think: Was Gon always a villain?

10 Taking Ponzu's Tag

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (1)

While not exactly villainous, this was still a jerk move. After Ponzu tried to catch Bourbon while he was hiding, she inadvertently got caught by his snakes and accidentally ends up killing Bourbon before he can call them off. Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika all get caught in the trap when they try to help Leorio get her badge. In a brief moment of teamwork, the four of them work together to escape the cave.

Ponzu even lets Gon knock her out with her own sleeping gas. However, despite teaming together and her being unconscious, Gon takes it upon himself to take Ponzu's tag, keeping Leorio in the exam but eliminating her. For a kid that puts on a hissy fit to win things on his term, this was pretty unfair.

9 Punishing Genthru

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (2)

When Gon, Killua, and Biscuit Krueger developed a plan to thwart the Bombers and get the remaining cards that they needed, they were able to find a way to defeat them with as little fighting as possible. However, Gon wasn't satisfied with just stopping Genthru. He wanted to personally punish Genthru for his actions by abandoning the group's plan and facilitating a one-on-one brawl.

(Video) 5 Times Gon Was Underestimated | Hunter X Hunter 💥

He didn't need to do this. The group would've easily had their justice if they stayed the course. Gon, however, wanted to see the fear in Genthru's face and the weight of his stomach on his fist. Gon didn't want justice. He wanted pure vengeance and satisfaction for himself.

8 Killing Neferpitou In Cold Blood

This won't come off as a villainous act to many fans. Much like Genthru, Neferpitou was a storyline villain herself that had killed and tortured people all for the sake of her king. However, much like his fight with Genthru, Gon didn't want to punish her to actually save anyone or change the world.

He felt personally angered and upset with Pitou's actions and wanted the gratification of killing her himself. He did this despite nearly killing himself. He did this besides the best wishes of his friends and team. Gon didn't have a plan to save the world in this arc. He just wanted revenge.

7 Saying That Killua Didn't Care As Much About Kite

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (4)

While Killua, Knuckle, and even the ants evolved to better themselves throughout the Chimera Ant Arc, Gon only found himself sinking deeper into a pit of despair. In his efforts to solely focus on finding Pitou and saving Kite, he began alienating some of his closest friends.

(Video) Gon Vs Gon - Transformation Of Hunter ( Chimera Ant Arc) Hunter x Hunter

One of the best examples of this and most heartbreaking scenes in the entire series is when he flips out at Killua for not caring about Kite as much as he did, even though Killua was just trying to get him to think rationally about their mission. It should also be noted that he never acknowledges this outburst or apologizes for it.

6 Watching Killua Kill Johness

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (5)

One scene that a lot of fans like to turn to as a sign of Gon's mixed morality and sanity occurs during the Hunter Exams. During the labyrinth section, the two's team had to compete in individual contests against real life, prisoners. Killua had the honor of fighting one of his world's most infamous serial killers, Johness.

And as hyped as Johness was for this fight, Killua was able to kill him quickly and easily, literally showing off Johness' heart in his hands. While this reasonably freaked out the rest of the group, Gon nonchalantly passed it off and even smiled when revealing that his new, best friend was a trained assassin.

5 Letting Killua Get Hurt During The Dodgeball Match

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (6)

The dodgeball match against Razor was the ultimate culmination of the boys' training during the Greed Islnd Arc. While it makes sense to try one's hardest during this, it seems like Gon sacrificed a little too much for just a game or, at least, Killua did.

(Video) Everyone being impressed by killua and gon for 12 minutes straight

To help serve Gon the dodgeballs, Killua had to catch Razor's enhanced throws with his hands. As strong as Killua was, this inevitably ended up bruising and deforming his hands. Even after learning this, Gon didn't want to switch him out or end the game. He said that he didn't want anybody else being his partner, even though his partner was getting really, really hurt in the process.

4 Letting A Serial Killer Get Away

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (7)

As part of Gon and Killua's training under Biscuit Krueger, Bisky manages to catch Binolt, a serial killer that used Nen and scissors, and uses him as a sparring partner for the boys. As dangerous as this could've been, Gon and Killua were able to more than handle him and made great use of the experience. This experience was apparently so positive that Gon decides at the end to let Binolt get away.

Binolt did not show any change in character or any remorse at this point. He had a flashback arc and that was it. For Gon, just because Binolt helped them train, he let him loose into the world, assumedly to kill once again. Even some villains wouldn't do this.

3 Killing Ants Without Remorse

Prior to the Chimera Ant Arc, Gon had never actually killed anyone, except some wildlife for food. Despite how coolheaded he's been with seeing death, Gon himself had never shown one murderous tendency before. He even inadvertently influenced Killua to stray away from killing for some time. That promise however melts away when the boysneed to fight the Chimera Ants.

(Video) Gon was so badass Anime Hunter x Hunter

It makes sense for Killua to easily get back into the groove of killing again, especially for a worthy cause. Gon, however, shows no noticeable change in personality after killing for the first time. He just kills the ants, creatures that share similar traits to humans, without any restraint as if it was just second nature to him.

2 Threatening To Kill Meleoron

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (9)

In a classic instance of shonen purity, Gon is able to quickly befriend one of the Chimera Ants, Meleoron, even though he did attempt to spy on him. All it took was Meleoron promising not to lie to Gon which Gon took in good faith. The sheer ease of Gon's intentions surprised even Meleoron.

When the chameleon asks Gon why he's able to trust him so easily, Gon just states that he believes him; and if he is lying, that would just make it easier to kill him. Gon says this while holding a cold look on his face as if he does expect Meleoron to betray him and he's just waiting for an excuse. Meleoron wasn't working with Gon. He was being held hostage.

1 Holding Komugi Hostage

Hunter X Hunter: 10 Times Gon Acted Like A Villain (10)

Perhaps the coldest thing that Gon has done to date, something that could signal even villainous tendencies, was how easily and wiling he was to hold Komugi's damaged, unconscious body hostage. When he found Pitou healing and even protecting Komugi's body after Netero and Zeno's attack, he felt insulted and began berating her like a spoiled kid.

(Video) Why Gon is a Monster.

He lets Pitou keep healing her before he takes her to Kite but promises to kill Komugi if she either takes too long or tries anything funny. As dire as the situation was, Komugi was just a casualty of the greater war, and Gon was using her vulnerability as leverage for his own selfish means of revenge.
